Sak Yant of the Week – Hah Taew (5 Line)

A Thai tattoo which has increased in popularity since received by the actress Angelina Jolie.

The Hah Taew or Five Line Sak Yant was created almost a thousand years ago by Buddhist Monk Kruba Kam. Over time, the original script written in the ancient Khom language have been changed up and translated into other languages. At Thai Ink Tattoo, we stick as close as possible to the original design. The 5 lines of script are as follows:

  1. i ra cha ka ta ra sa
  2. ti hang ja toh loh ti nang
  3. soh ma na ga ri tah toh
  4. pi sam lah loh pu sa pu
  5. ka pu bam too tahm wa ka

Similarly to the Gao Yord we wrote about last week, the 5 Lines each protect you against something or boost your powers in some form.

The first line protects the place you live in and cleans away unwanted or malevolent spirits. It allows the balance to lean in your favour and protect you against unjust punishment.

The second row protects against bad horoscope predictions and can protect against bad fortune.

The third row protects you from those who may put a curse on you or the use of black magic.

The fourth row helps you in your success and fortune, gives you energy for your ambitions and lifestyle choices.

The fifth row allows you to be more appealing to the opposite sex and gives you extra charisma which can also help boost the fourth line.

Like other Sak Yant designs, they’re made up of elements which create the overall tattoo. In a 5 line tattoo, they’re made up of script which have Unalome at the end of each line. An Unalome is the zig zag line with a spiral. It represents saints who have attained the status of enlightenment. The zigzag us designed to evolve into a straight line at the end, depicting the difficult walk in the unknown, forming straight at the end of the path to Nirvana. It is unwavering. The spiral at the other end represents the crown of the head of Buddha.

There are a few different designs of the 5 line tattoo. Including elements in the middle such as lotus and half moon, or a diamond pattern which comes from the story of Hlwong Por Parn who found a silver template engraved with the Kata. This diamond pattern is supposed to give armour and protection against physical harm.

Five line tattoos are available at Thai Ink Tattoo including via traditional hand-poke method. Also included is the blessing of the tattoo.
